| Military: | Richard served 2 periods in the army. The first, in the 30th Regiment of Foot, from 25 Aug 1799 to to 14 Aug 1802, as a Private, serving for 2 years 294 days. He re-enlisted into the 31st Regiment of Foot on 25 Apr 1805 and after 1 year 107 days was promoted to Corporal. 3 years 148 days later he was promoted to Sergeant and served as such for 10 years 28 days. From the service dates and Richards units, it is likely that when with the 30th Foot he fought in the British force in Egypt in 1801, going on to fight at Alexandria. It is also possible that he fought in the Peninsula War (1808-1814) when with the 31st Foot, in battles such as Vittoria and Nivelle.
